Liposuction to Sculpt the Body
Liposuction is a surgical technique that can eliminate fat deposits that resist other forms of body contouring such as dieting, exercise and weight loss. This technique allows for sculpting specific problem areas of your face and body, including your hips, thighs, abdomen, and neck. Liposuction may not achieve perfection, but it can improve your contour and because no skin is removed, it leaves no conspicuous scars. When you look better, you feel better and more self-confident.
How Liposuction is Performed
Liposuction can be performed as an outpatient procedure in a San Jose area hospital or surgical center under local or general anesthesia. The procedure may take from 30 minutes to several hours.
Small incisions are made in your skin and a narrow tube (cannula) is inserted into the fat layer below. The doctor applies ultrasound energy and manipulates the cannula back and forth to loosen the fat and then a suction device attached to the cannula removes it. The suctioned spaces in the fat layer collapse after surgery, resulting in an improved body contour. In most cases, the tiny scars of the incisions can be concealed in natural body creases.

Recovering from Liposuction Surgery
During the initial healing period, you will wear a snug dressing, bandage or compression garment to prevent fluid accumulation, reduce swelling, and help your skin conform to your new body shape.
The time it takes for recovery depends on the extent of the surgery. Most of the swelling, discoloration, and uneven skin surface will improve within the first month. It could take from three months to one year to fully achieve the final results. Possible complications include bleeding, infection, uneven skin surface, numbness, and discoloration. Any pain resulting from the surgery can be controlled with medication.
